Exodus 4: No Thank You Very Much

You have spent weeks memorizing lines, making costumes and making sure the batteries are charged

in the camcorder, just to arrive at the big day to find your child will not go on stage. You coax, prod, plead, beg....but your child just presses further behind your legs refusing to go on with the rest of his/her class. All that work! You are the only one that gets to see the funny, charming, witty kid. You watch the other kids on stage, knowing how much your child is missing out on, but there is nothing you can do.
This is how I imagine God must have felt with Moses. He had planned Moses life from day one, hiding him right under Pharaohs nose. Raising him to be a leader and a diplomat in the palace, in an ironic twist that would end with Moses leading the Israelites our from under Pharaohs rule. Then when the time comes, Moses gets stage fright. God is patient at first, but finally gives in and allows Moses to use his brother Aaron to do the talking. God will speak to Moses and Moses will tell Aaron, then Aaron will recite the lines to Pharaoh.

TIDBITS FROM EXODUS 4:

  • In verses 2-9 God gives Moses three signs to prove to the Israelites that Moses is their chosen leader.
  • The argument that Moses is not eloquent is offensive as God is the one that created Moses and his tongue. God's answer is "Who do you think made your mouth?, therefore GO!"
  • Moses finally gets the hint when he asks point blank to be let off the hook. God gets angry and Moses stops begging.
  • Moses is respectful to his father in law and shares the plan with him before leaving.
  • Moses and Zipporah in a strange event circumcise their sons on the way to Egypt
  • The people respond to the signs God gave Moses to show them.
