Don't be Scared of the Dark :Exodus 10

Dark and Light

The dark is scary. Lets face it, even as adults nighttime can be a little freaky. As children we are freaked out about the closet, what's under the bed or shapes that turn into monsters in the shadows. We like night lites or the TV on so that we don't have to lay there at nigh in total darkness. Something about the dark makes our thoughts turn strange and sometimes sad. The shadows and alleyways along the street creep us out as we imagine scary characters doing evil things. We cross the street to stay safe as we hurry to feel safe again.
This is the picture that Jesus is to our lives. We live in darkness before He comes to us. We are lost in a land of sin and confusion wondering why we are here, what happens next, and scared of what is lurking in the corners of our own lives. We are ashamed of the thoughts and sin that make us feel so much less than worthy of God's love. We would rather stay scared in the dark keeping our ugliness hidden than come in to the light and feel ashamed as our sin is exposed.
If we would just look up, we would see that the shames is gone, our sin has been washed away and He is thrilled that we have finally trusted His love.

Matthew 4:
13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
    the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”[f]
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Luke 1:
76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
    by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
    and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

TIDBITS ON EXODUS 10

  • The plagues turn from natural to the supernatural
  • The plagues go from bad to worse just as they will in the book of Revelation
  • Gods goal is to leave people with no way to say they did know. He is God and the only way to deny it is to completely ignore what they have seen and heard intentionally.
