2 Samuel Chapter 2 From Fugitive to King

2nd Samuel Chapter 2: From Fugitive to King

With Saul and Jonathan killed in battle David grieves, however this also leaves him free to follow God's direction as the future king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:3). David seeks God's guidance. God directs him to Judah, or more specifically Hebron. David is crowned King of Judah. He is not yet made King over all Israel as Abner (Saul's cousin and the general of his army) decided that Ishbosheth Saul's son should be King of Israel and makes it so. David will deal with this in time. This transition of kingship took about 7 years total. During this time David hears that the men of Jabesh Gilead had honored Saul after he was killed. He publicly thanks them. Joab (the head of David's army), and Abner decide to settle the battle of who should be king by having their top 12 men fight each other. David's men win however it starts an all out battle. In the heat of the battle Joab's brother Ahsael is killed by Abner. This becomes a sore spot with Joab, and will not end well for Abner.

What I learned from the 2nd Chapter of 2nd Samuel:

1. If you are not someone who can be trusted, you won't know who you can trust.
2. God will keep His promises in His own time, stressing about it won't speed up His plan.
3. Don't be on the wrong team. Always choose to side with those who side with God.
4. Don't use people.
5. Don't chase power. God chooses leaders, and God shuts leaders down. Don't be fooled into thinking you are actually in charge.
