2 Samuel 23
The Bible Blog: 2 Samuel 23
"Why should I have to audition?" The angry woman was absolutely incensed that she should have to "compete" for a spot on the worship team. She felt than anyone that wanted to lead worship should be able to hop up and be on whatever team they chose, after all you need volunteers, right? This same woman, when asked to help in the nursery, or on the hospitality team seemed to suddenly be out of time.
This was not the first time the worship leader had received this kind of reaction from members of the church, and it wouldn't be the last. Thankfully, he did not take the confrontation personally, but graciously explained that God gifts us all in different ways. Instead of wanting the gifts he has given others, we need to find and use the gifts he has uniquely given to each of us. Then seek Him to find his purpose for those gifts.
Our gifts our not for our own glory, or to be used for selfish gain, but to bring Glory to our Creator and the giver of all good gifts. This attitude helps us to keep jealousy over other's gifts at bay and be grateful that we have been chosen, and can be used by God.
The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14 talks about these gifts. He specifically mentions not being envious of people with gifts such as King David has in todays passage, but to humbly accept the gift God has chosen for us.
David had the gift of prophecy as is evidenced in the book of Psalms and here in 2 Samuel where he proclaims....2 Samuel 23:2 “The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue.
As we come towards the close of the book of 2 Samuel David begins to run us through the final histories of his glorious reign as Israel's chosen King through whose family the Messiah will eventually come to us.
