What Did the Prophets Do Again?
Growing up in the church I went to Sunday School. I memorized the books of the Bible to a fun song and
participated in memory verse contests. I went to a Christian school where we were taught a lot of good Bible teaching that I didn't appreciate at the time; however, in all this learning I never really got the deal with the prophets. It wasn't until years later when I grew up and cared to learn what the Bible really had to say that I figured out how the prophets fit in and what they had to say. I started studying and taking classes to learn how it all fit together. I also discovered the how the Bible flowed as one story. Suddenly a whole new world of understanding broke into my Christian world.
Leviticus 26 sets the stage for the judges and the prophets who will soon enter the Israelite's story.
God takes time at the end of Leviticus to remind the Israelites what will happen if they do and do not obey the commandments that He has given them. He goes through the blessing and the punishments, very clearly. He then finishes by reminding them that He is their God and how great His love for them is. Just like with our own kids, we make the rules clear and explain they are necessary, then we remind our children that the rules are there because we love them; And just like the Israelites, our kids promise to obey and leave to do what they want.
As we head into the time of wandering in the wilderness with Moses and, conquest with Joshua, the year of the Judges and Kings we will hear these words come back to the Israelites over and over again in the voices of the prophets. We will also learn how we "the gentiles" fit into this beautiful story, and look forward with Israel to the Grand Finale.
