the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness!
Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt? And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.

How many times do people say they want a job. Then when they are blessed with the job they say they wanted, within days they are complaining about things at work. They want the job to suit them, do things their way, they think they deserve more money, or better working conditions. They have quickly forgotten that this is exactly what they asked for, Before long they are back in the unemployment line, wishing they could have a job again. The humility of obeying a boss and doing things their way is difficult. Paying the price of having good things often comes in the form of humility, gratefulness, and patience. We don't get to be in control and have things on our own schedule. The Israelites got exactly what they asked for. God let them die in the wilderness and gave the promised land to their children to show the Israelites  that their children's future was in His hands. God can be trusted.

TIDBITS FROM NUMBERS 14:
  • Versus 13-19 Moses appeals to God's reputation to plead for the Israelites so that God will not wipe them out. Moses says "how would that look?"
  • Verse 37 The ten spies that denied God's power died of a plague to drive the point home
  • The Israelites quickly learn that God means what He says when they try to conquer the land and go against God's decision.
