Heart Surgery: Deuteronomy 10
As Moses Continues to speak to the Israelites he reminds them that God has been merciful to them. He tells them to remember that this mercy was not because they deserved it but because Moses had prayed for them. He reminds them of the stone tablets that are still sitting in the Ark of the Covenant, so that they are not tempted to blow off what he is telling them as "their parents religion".
Then after these reminders Moses says: because of all these things you need to submit to God, cling to Him and be willing to be different than all the people around you.
He uses the phrase "circumcise you heart".
This phrase is repeated all over the Bible in the New and Old Testament. This repetition tells us to wake up and pay attention: so, What does it mean?
In Colossians we are told that it means we who were dead in our sins are made alive in Christ. We have a new life.
In Romans we read that this is an act of the Holy Spirit, not something that can be done with human hands.
This circumcision results in us loving God will ALL our heart and soul, so that we can live (Deut.30:6)
The Jews just like us had to choose the act of circumcision. God wanted them to understand that his outward act was to have an inward result. When the Holy Spirit was sent to us in the book of Acts, He began performing heart surgery on all who chose belong to God.
Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. 13 And you must always obey the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.
Colossians 2:11-13(8-15) - vs. 11-13: "and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,"
Romans 2:28-29(17-29) - vs. 28-29: "For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God."
Deuteronomy 10:12-17
12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good? 14 Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. 15 Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. 16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn. 17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.
Deuteronomy 30:6 The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.
Jeremiah 4:3-4 - "For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, "Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord and remove the foreskins of your heart, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, or else My wrath will go forth like fire and burn with none to quench it, because of the evil of your deeds."
