A Different Kind of Love Deuteronomy 11
A Different Kind of Love
Deuteronomy 11:23b "love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast to him—"
Friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses, parents, grandparents........all have someone they love. They are all different kinds of love, not one of them the same. Love has stages: it deepens, grows cold, shifts and changes as times goes on. Finding love can be wonderful, and losing it is shatteringly painful.
Many people have been hurt by people leaving, affairs, or "falling out of love". This is a common problem when the love we promise or are given is based on how we feel, and not a deeper unconditional commitment.
Moses in his oratory warns the Israelites that there love is to be different than human to human love. Their love for Yahweh is a choice and they must guard against giving their love to another. (11:16-20)
In Deuteronomy 11 Moses continues to give his historical motivational, charge to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. He warns them not to take their relationship with Yahweh casually.
They have been chosen, and God demands that they love Him and are devoted to Him only. Moses gives them a list of practices that will be reminders and help them stay devoted to Yahweh. He knows that the price of betraying this love is high, and should not be taken lightly.
Yahweh demanded that his chosen people give Him their lives in every way. Their love should be made clear by the way they live. They belong to Him and Him alone.
Deuteronomy 11:16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. 17 Then the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the Lord is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
