Prophesying Frenzy/ 1 Samuel 19
Prophesying Frenzy/ 1 Samuel 19
Summary of 1 Samuel 19:This week chapter opens with King Saul ordering a hit on David's life. He is jealous of David's relationship with God and his popularity with the people.Jonathan
being David's friend tells David to hide while he tries to reason with his father. Jonathan goes to his father and says "Dad why do you want to kill David? He's a great soldier and God is with him, shouldn't you be happy?" Saul say's "you're right son. I won't kill David after all." Things are peaceful for a short time (note a theme is forming).
War breaks out. David, in true David style, makes quick work of the Philistines and sends them on their way. Saul, in true Saul style, becomes extremely jealous and is filled with evil intentions. He orders another hit on David, sending men to kill David in his sleep at night. Saul's daughter Michal (David's wife) warns him and lets him out through a window. Then quick thinking Michal pulls a Ferris Bueller. She creates a "fake David" out of an idol she has laying around and some goat hair. She paces it under the covers in his bed. She tells the hit men that he is sick and can't come out to play today.
Once on the ground David takes off to find the Prophet Samuel. He locates him and stays with him in a place called Ramah. They head off together to a place called Naioth, evidently this is where the prophets gather to prophecy. Saul is tipped off on David's whereabouts. He sends men to kill him, but every time anyone gets close enough to kill David they are overcome with the need to prophesy. Saul, having enough of this shenanigans decides he better take care of David himself, but even Saul ends up overtaken with the prophesying bug. The chapter ends with Saul laying Naked on the ground after a night of prophesying in Naioth.
What I learned from 1 Samuel 19:
1. Loyal friends are important and should be appreciated.
2. A parent should never ask their child to make a choice between them and their spouse. The parent will be the loser in that deal, as it should be.
3.It is important to have a wise mentor in your life.
4. The Spirit of God is powerful.
5 .God has a sense of humor.
