Trust Me: Deuteronomy 28
Trust Me!
I love a good magician. I try to watch every move to see how they do their tricks. With the really good ones, I am amazed and time after time, here myself exclaim
“HOW DID THEY DO THAT?”
I love it!
It’s one thing if you know your being tricked for entertainment value. It’s another to have someone deceive you on purpose. When you find yourself in a bad position because you trusted someone, just to discover that you were the victim of a fraud or con, you get angry. If the con was masterfully done you even have good excuse for your gullibility.
Israel did not have a good excuse for their bad decisions. Deuteronomy 28 is a gruesome and very detailed description of the blessings and curses that await them if the trust God. God through Moses clearly spells out all the wonders that will be lavished on them if they follow His laws and stay true to Him. Consequently He describes the devastating future that awaits them if they turn away.
There is no slight of hand, hidden tricks up his sleeve or agendas, and there are no excuses. Everything is out in the open.
The law was given to show that God is holy. We cannot achieve this holiness on our own. Sacrifices needed to be made to cover the infractions to the law, and sanctify us.
It is important that we understand the need for a redeemer, a merciful rescuer. Even at our best, the law will trip up our flesh every time. God's law is perfect. Israel will illustrate this need and illustrate how even our best intentions fail over time. It is a sad story with a glorious ending, most of which is yet to come.
