Joshua 7: I saw, I wanted, I took, I sinned
When is a sin actually a sin? Is it when we act on our desire, or when we allow the desire to grow in our hearts? It's a very chicken and egg kind of question. James 4:2-3 tells us that sin begins in the
mind, when "you want what you can't have". We want power, attention, things, or experiences that
we know God has told us to stay away from. We continue to want them and allow that desire to become more powerful than our desire for the God who loves us. We sin.
In our passage today Achan see's something that Yawhweh has specifically forbidden. Yahweh was very clear that the treasure from the city of Jericho was to be consecrated for to himself. Achan lost sight of what God had promised for the future of Israel and wanted what his eyes saw, "RIGHT NOW". Instead of trusting the God who had just brought down the walls of the city with a shout, he placed his trust in things. He lost eternal perspective.
James 4:3-8
You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

1 John 2:15
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
