Heart Matters: 1 Samuel 4

Heart Matters: 1 Samuel 4

Summary:

The Israelites loses a series of battles against the Philistines. They think that having the Ark of the Covenant with them into the battle will give them am automatic win. They go and get the Ark. When it enters the camp the celebration is so loud it shakes the earth. The the Ark is put in the place of honor and proceeds them into battle, but all that does is get the Ark captured by the Philistines. As predicted Eli’s two sons die in the battle. When Eli hears about the Ark he falls of his seat backwards breaks his neck and dies. The newly widowed wife of his son Phineas goes into labor and has a son. She names him Ichabod
which means the glory has left Israel.

“When the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord entered the camp, all Israel burst into a great shout, so that the earth resounded.” (v. 5)

SIDE NOTE: The Ark of the Covenant was considered to represent Yahweh. It held sacred articles that reminded Israel of God’s miraculous redemption of them from Egypt.

What I Learned From 1 Samuel 4:

1. God doesn't do tricks on Command. He wants hearts devoted to Him, not outward expressions of loyalty void of faith.
2. Seek God when you don't know what to do
3. Don't celebrate before the victory.
4. God follows through on His promises, good and bad. Take Him seriously.
5. It's great when names mean something special. Think through what you name your children. I vote to NOT name them negative things like Ichabod.
