To Know the Lord: 1 Samuel Chapter 3
To Know the Lord: 1 Samuel Chapter 3
Summary of Chapter 3:
Eli, the current priest of the temple is getting older. Samuel is now about 12 and has been serving in the temple with him now about 7 years. Samuel is audibly called by God, but does not understand that it is God calling until he Eli explains this to him. When Samuel answers God's call he is given a message for Eli that will be difficult to deliver. Eli accepts the message when he finally threatens it out of the reluctant Samuel. God is going to pass judgement on Eli and his sons for Eli's passive expectance of his sons disrespect for God and vile behavior in His Temple. Samuel grows to be a great prophet in Israel and is used greatly by God.What I learned from 1 Samuel Chapter 3:
- Knowing the Lord is different than believing God is real, Samuel knew God existed but did not yet have a relationship with Him.
- There are times when vision are more prevalent than others (1 Samuel 3:1), God reveals himself when He wants to, and as he did before he will again.
- Acts 2:17 "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
- Joel 2:28 "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
- God has an end to his patience and will eventually act when we don't choose to obey. Eli as the priest was tasked with showing God's holiness through the Mosaic law. He chose his son's over his calling.
- Samuel was raised until close to age by a mother that had great faith in God. Even though he was also being raised now by the priest Eli, it appears the faith she instilled in him still guided him.
- God chooses when and how he is going to use us, we are to remain available for HIS purposes, not our own.
