The Fear of The Lord: 1 Samuel 2

The Fear of the Lord

Summary of 1 Samuel chapter 2:

Hannah who was barren, but has now had a son, is now offering up a beautiful and powerful prayer of praise to God. She is further blessed with 5 more children. This prayer of praise is in contrast to the prayer in chapter one where she pleaded with the Lord for a child.
Eli's the priest in the temple at Shiloh has sons that serve those who come to offer sacrifices. His sons prove to have no respect or fear for the Lord. They are greedy, lust filled bullies that use the family position to get what they want. Because of this God passes judgement on them. A man of God prophecies to Eli that his sons and the family line will be punished for their sin. Eli is the man that Samuel, Hannah's son will learn from and serve with.

What I learned from 1 Samuel Chapter 2:

  1. Proverbs 9:10 The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom should be a daily mantra! A healthy respect for my loving Father should guide my thoughts, words and actions.
  2. My life is completely in Gods hands. I can and should place all my trust in Him
  3. I am responsible to stop even my grown children actions that are disrespectful to my God. My first loyalty is to Him.
  4. It is not my skill or smarts that puts me in any positon. God is the one that places people where He wants them, or brings them down.
  5. No matter what the world says, I will put my trust in what God says. James 4:6 God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble
