1 Samuel 25: Who Do You Trust?
1 Samuel 25 Summary:
The prophet Samuel dies and all of Israel mourns his death. We are introduced to a man named Nabal, and his wife Abigail. Nabal is wicked and Abigail is described as intelligent and beautiful. David is nearby
with his band of outcasts (600+ men) They are guarding the land of Nabal. When David hears that it is sheep shearing time he sends his men to Speak to Nabal in his name. He instructs them to ask for provisions as payment for his protection. Nabal pretends not to know who David is (although all if Israel knows him). David is offended. He tells his men to strap on their swords they are going to avenge themselves. The servant go to Abigail tell her what has happened and ask her to help. Abigail thinks quickly. She sends provision to David' men and follows on a doneky. When she see's David she bows down. She appeals to David. David listens and commends her for being so wise. The next day Abigail tells Nabal what happened. Nabal immediately has a stroke. He dies 10 days later (God strikes him dead). David hears about Nabal's death and sends for Abigail to be his wife.
What I learned from 1 Samuel 25:
1. When I die I want people to mourn me like Samuel, not celebrated my death like Nabal.
2. Courage can look like humility and wisdom, not necessarily bravado.
3. Trusting in money can cost you your life.
4. It is important to you know your audience and choose the right time to speak.
5. You never know, tomorrow you could be King or the wife of King.
