Give me your poor, your discontented: 1 Samuel 22

With King Saul trying to kill him, David escaped to a cave to hide. His family hearing through the grapevine where he had gone, find him. Everyone who was in debt, in trouble, or just plain upset with the way of things rally around him. He became the commander of this discontented group of 400sih men. This outcast army would eventually grow to over 600 men.
Getting permission from the King of Moab he hides his family in his land and continues on the run with his band of men, in a forest near Judah.
Saul hearing that David was near began to ask around for him, in his usual kind manner. David's good reputation was evident in the way people spoke about him. When Saul found out that a the priest had helped him with food and the sword of Goliath, he had the priests and all their families slaughtered in a rage.
One young priest escaped, and went to David. David swore to protect him. He became the priest of David's band of outlaws.

What I learned from 1 Samuel 22:

  • People want a leader to rally around, it gives them hope.
  • A homeless person can also be a king.
  • A good leader cares for those in his charge before himself.
  • Insanely jealous and hot tempered people are not safe.
  • Leaders with character provide safety for others.
