2 Samuel 12: My Daily Bible Blog

What Happened:

The prophet Nathan is sent to King David with a message in story form. Just like David sent a message to Joab concerning the murder of Bathsheba's husband. God sends David a message concerning the consequences of his very wrong decisions.
In Nathan's story a rich man with flocks of sheep, takes the beloved and only sheep belonging to a poor man to feed his dinner guests. David is outraged by the story, and declares the rich man should be put to death. Nathan looks David square in the face and declares,

 "you are that man"

Nathan relays to David God's disappointment in David's selfish and greedy actions, especially after all the goodness God has showered on him.
David gets the point and is repentant. He grieves over his sin as we read in Psalm 32 and Psalm 51. He receives grace as he is not put to death for the sin that he committed, however the child that Bathsheba had given him dies. David and Bathsheba have another son, Solomon. God loves the child and gives him a special name.
All this time Joab is out fighting for the kingdom. He calls to King David to bring reinforcements and together they take the Ammonite towns.

My Prayer:

Father,

Often the messages of the world infiltrate my heart and mind causing me to fall into an attitude of entitlement and discontent. I don't want to treat your gift of salvation as if it is not enough. Forgive my discontent and ungratefulness. Remind me daily to keep an eternal perspective and grateful spirit.

Amen

Psalm 32

Of David. A maskil.[a]

Blessed is the one
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord does not count against them
    and in whose spirit is no deceit.

When I kept silent,
    my bones wasted away
    through my groaning all day long.

For day and night
    your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped
    as in the heat of summer.[b]

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
    my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;
surely the rising of the mighty waters
    will not reach them.

You are my hiding place;
    you will protect me from trouble
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
    or they will not come to you.

10 Many are the woes of the wicked,
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts in him.

11 Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous;
    sing, all you who are upright in heart!

Psalm 51[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.

Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.

Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
    and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
    you who are God my Savior,
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 Open my lips, Lord,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
    in burnt offerings offered whole;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.
