2 Samuel Chapter 7: The Daily Bible Blog
What Happened?
David settles in as King of Israel. His first order of business, to build a permanent structure for the Ark of The Covenant.Since his own palace is so beautiful, God's Ark should have one too. He shares his grand idea with the prophet Nathan. Nathan's thinks its a sound plan. He tells King David in no uncertain terms to "GO FOR IT"!
That night God comes to Nathan and reveals to him that David should not "go for it" and by the way, if He needs a temple built He will ask for one.
God goes on to reveal that although he does not want David to build the temple, he has not lost God's favor. God establishes an everlasting covenant with the House of David. The covenant blessing revealed to Nathan not only establishes a blessing to David's offspring, it also reveals that the coming Messiah will spring from the line of David.
David's response to this declared covenant/revelation is to sit before God in prayer, filled with humility, gratefulness, praise, and a declaration of faith for all that God has done and promises to do.
David refers to himself as "your servant" 10 times throughout this time of prayer.
Samuel 7:13 New International Version (NIV)
13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Hebrews 1:8 New International Version (NIV)
8 But about the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
My Prayer:
Father,
Let me never forget what my redemption cost you. That I am free because you chose to rescue me from bondage. Let me sit before you, as David did, in awe at that you would choose me to be blessed by a relationship with you forever!
Amen
