The Daily Bible Blog: 2 Samuel 5

What Happened?

All of the people of Israel acknowledge God's hand on David and he is anointed king over all of Israel. He is 33 years old when this happens and reigns over a Israel for 40 years. Israel is a united kingdom at this time. David knows that God is with him and has blessed him.
David's first act of monarchial business is to march into Jerusalem and evict the Jebusites; second, with some help from a neighbor a palace is built in this city and it is dubbed "The City of David".
As was customary and likely in an effort to make treaties with other nations, David takes on several concubines and wives. (Just because it's customer doesn't mean God was pleased with it.)
The Philistines hear that David is made king and decided they better let him know where they stand. The rise up and face him in war, not once but twice. In both instances David first seeks God's council before he acts. In both instances God goes before David and give him the victory.

Deuteronomy 17:17. (Instructions to the future kings of Israel) 17 He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

My Prayer:

Father,

When I am tempted to worry or be anxious over a situation help me to come and give it to you. Then give me the strength to follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit in peace, knowing that you go before me in the battle.

Amen

Philippians 4:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
